Why School Supplies Are the First Step to a Child's Future in Haiti

Every August, millions of children around the world head back to school with new backpacks, fresh notebooks, and sharpened pencils. It's a ritual so ordinary in many countries that it barely registers.

In Haiti, it's anything but ordinary.

The barrier no one talks about

For many children in Haiti, the school year doesn't start with excitement — it starts with a question: Do we have enough money for supplies?

Many schools in Haiti require students to arrive with their own materials. No notebooks, no pencils, no backpack — no seat in the classroom. Teachers simply cannot accommodate students who arrive empty-handed. It's not a policy born of cruelty; it's a reflection of how under-resourced the entire system is.

The result is that thousands of children who want to learn, whose families want them to learn, are turned away at the door before the school year even begins.

What a backpack actually means

When Reshape ED puts a backpack in a child's hands, we're not just giving them supplies. We're giving them:

  • Access. The ability to walk through the classroom door and take their seat.
  • Dignity. The feeling of arriving prepared, like every other child.
  • Momentum. A school year that starts on the right foot — which research consistently shows leads to better attendance and outcomes.

A $25 donation covers a fully stocked backpack. A $50 donation supplies an entire classroom. These aren't abstract numbers — they're the difference between a child being in school or at home.

Why this drive, why now

Reshape ED's Back-to-School Supplies Drive runs every August, timed to the start of the Haitian school year. We work directly with communities on the ground to identify the children who need support most — and to make sure every donation reaches the right hands.

This year, we're also building something new: a community of supporters who want to follow the impact of their giving in real time. When you sign up for our newsletter, you'll receive updates straight from the field — photos, stories, and the real numbers behind every backpack delivered.

How to help

The drive runs from August 10 through September 5. Here's what your support does:

  • $10 puts notebooks and pencils in a child's hands
  • $25 provides a fully stocked backpack
  • $50 supplies an entire classroom

Every dollar goes directly to programs. No overhead. No mystery.

Support the Back-to-School Drive and follow every step of the impact

The school year is starting. Let's make sure every child in Haiti can walk through that door.
